Trafikanten had a frames-based portal solution that over the past 10 years had become completely out of date. The solution was not based on any acknowledged portal solution (CMS), required a lot of resources and was difficult to administer. All development was complicated, complex and associated with a great deal of risk.
The portals consisted of frame-based, static HTML pages with a minimum of scripting - with no support for bookmarking URLs. All of the users received the same web content, because different browsers were not identified and processed individually. The content also had to be copied manually between the various websites because there was no publishing system.
The solutions also lacked support for more recent Internet technology, which makes it possible to design far better user interfaces and screen dialogues than in the past. Trafikanten is one of the most used portals in Norway, serving more than 1.5 million unique users every month. The underlying architecture scaled far too poorly to support a heavy, expected increase in future traffic.
EVRY has developed a completely new Internet portal, intranet and mobile application, based on the publishing system EpiServer 5.0 on a Windows platform. The project was completed using flexible methods and Scrum. This was decisive, so that the customer could add a significant number of new functions to the solution in the course of the project.
EVRY has been responsible for:
The main project was carried out between September 2009 and June 2010. The solution contains many functional elements, including:
External developers, who make third party applications for iPhone, Windows Mobile, Android, etc. are offered the same web services that the new portal uses.
With the new publishing system Trafikanten's customers have received far better information on the Internet and mobile phones than before. It is a huge leap from yesterday's frame-based website and conforms Trafikanten's position as Norway's largest traffic portal.
The users have received a stronger user interface and better information, making it easier for people to use public transport. In addition, the 40 employees in the customer centre at Jernbanetorget, in the heart of Oslo, have been given a new and professional travel planner and intranet, improving the efficiency of their response to customer enquiries on the phone and by e-mail.
Bent Flyen, the project manager at Trafikanten AS sums up the delivery like this:
"Thanks to the skilled resources from EVRY, we have received a new, technological solution that meets all of our requirements, is far easier to administer than the old one and has a response time and performance that we have been nowhere near in the past."
In 2010 and 2011, the solution won a number of awards for the best site (content, ease of use, visibility on the Internet, adaptation to the user group and the users' experience when using the website): Rosingprisen, Farmandprisen, Gulltaggen and the Award for Design Excellence.
