The new style of IT

We are living in the digital age, where everything is in the process of being digitalised. "The new style of IT" is "the new style of business", in which IT is the growth engine. 

Globalisation, cloud computing and social media are important factors of today’s society. A large-scale digitalisation process is underway, and traditional business models are being challenged by new digital models.

The boundaries of industries are changing and many companies are coming to view data as their most valuable asset. With data comes insight, and with insight comes the basis for new services and business models. Many business have made good progress, but the market is developing quickly and it is important to adapt quickly.

Businesses and organisations will spend more money on technology in the future than previously. The difference is that this technology will not be called IT and will not be bought by the IT department. More than half of all IT services purchased will be bought by other departments as early as 2017. IT is becoming an integral part of every organisation.

Technology is the growth engine in society and can help make society more productive. Working in a different way is absolutely crucial to making the most of technology and to meeting the new challenges. This change also requires a new type of expertise, which is a type of expertise related to using data that specifically consists of finding what is valuable in large quantities of data.

Good examples?
Digitalisation leaves well-established industries wide-open to entirely new business models. In the insurance industry, comprehensive data will be used to determine price, whilst tomorrow’s health assessments will probably be based on measurements taken by an Apple Watch, and food in the future could be adapted to suit each individual’s DNA.

Neither Airbnb nor Uber existed seven years ago. Airbnb has more rooms than the Hilton hotel chain and in New York there are more Uber taxis than traditional yellow cabs. Both companies have in common the fact that their business models are digital and that software links buyers and sellers and creates global network effects – and that they are challenging today’s market leaders.
